KUALA LUMPUR , Feb 17 - Malaysia’s medical tourism industry generated RM2.13 billion in revenue last year, surpassing initial projections. A total of 1.26 million international patients sought treatment in the country, drawn by world-class healthcare at significantly lower costs.
According to the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC), patients can access premium medical care for a fraction of the price compared to destinations like the U.S., Europe, and neighboring Asian countries. Treatments in gastroenterology, obstetrics, and gynecology were among the most in demand.
For example, in-vitro fertilization (IVF) costs RM13,000 to RM17,000 per session in Malaysia, compared to RM67,000 to RM89,000 in the U.S. A liver transplant in Malaysia ranges from RM223,000 to RM312,000, whereas in Singapore, it can cost up to RM1 million.
Malaysia's affordability is further supported by strict government regulations ensuring high standards of care. Additionally, its strategic location and strong transport links make it easily accessible for medical tourists, especially from Indonesia, China, and India.
With over 200 accredited hospitals, many holding global certifications, Malaysia continues to strengthen its reputation as a leading destination for medical tourism.
