BEKASI (West Java), Jan 16 — Indonesia has tightened border controls to prevent the entry of Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), a highly contagious virus affecting goats and sheep that has spread to several Southeast Asian countries.

Quarantine Agency (Barantin) chief Sahat Manaor Panggabean said authorities are closely monitoring the disease, recently detected in Vietnam and Thailand, warning that it poses a serious threat to livestock with mortality rates reaching 100 per cent.

Travellers and transport operators have been urged not to bring goats, sheep or related products into the country, especially through entry points in Aceh, North Sumatra and Riau. Although PPR does not infect humans, Indonesia currently has no vaccine as the disease has yet to be detected locally. — Bernama-Antara
