JAKARTA, May 8 — Indonesian authorities are racing to rescue 20 hikers after Mount Dukono erupted on Halmahera island earlier today, according to local rescue officials.
The volcano in North Maluku province erupted at 7.41am local time, sending volcanic ash up to 10 kilometres into the sky, Indonesia’s volcanology agency said.
The agency maintained the volcano’s alert status at the third-highest level, with agency head Lana Saria urging the public to remain cautious.
Local rescue agency chief Iwan Ramdani said dozens of personnel, including police officers, had been deployed to locate and evacuate the trapped hikers.
Among the group are nine Singaporeans, while the remaining hikers are Indonesians, he said.
Authorities have advised residents and visitors to avoid all activities within a 4km radius of the crater due to safety concerns.
The volcanology agency also warned of possible volcanic mudflows during heavy rain.
As of now, there have been no reports of flight disruptions linked to the eruption. — Reuters
