PARIS, June 7 — US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth warned yesterday that Europe was facing what he described as an “invasion” of dangerous ideologies arriving by sea, drawing a link between immigration and the legacy of the D-Day landings during remarks in Normandy.
PARIS, May 16 — Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend their ceasefire for another 45 days following US-mediated talks, even as fresh violence broke out in southern Lebanon.
The United States Department of State said the extension will allow more time for negotiations, with further political talks set for June 2 and 3.
Lebanon said the move could pave the way for “lasting stability”, while Prime Minister Nawaf Salam called for international support to strengthen Beirut’s position in talks with Israel.
Despite the truce, Israeli strikes continued in southern Lebanon, including in Tyre and Haruf, where three paramedics were killed.
The Israeli military said more than 220 Hezbollah fighters were killed in the past week.
Meanwhile, oil prices rose nearly three per cent to around US$109 per barrel amid renewed concerns over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
The United Arab Emirates rejected Iranian claims that it had played a role in the conflict, while Iran said it is open to support from China in future negotiations. — AFP
