TOKYO, May 22 — Japanese police have arrested a former taxi driver suspected of drugging and raping a female passenger, with media reports indicating that dozens more women may have been victimized.

According to The Yomiuri Shimbun and Jiji Press, authorities uncovered approximately 3,000 videos and images showing the suspect sexually assaulting around 50 women, either in his taxi or at his home.

A Tokyo police spokesperson told AFP that last year, the 54-year-old man allegedly gave sleeping pills to a woman in her 20s, causing her to lose consciousness before taking her to his residence, where he committed and recorded the assault.

He was arrested on suspicion of non-consensual sexual intercourse and violating laws related to the filming of intimate body parts. Traces of sleeping pills were reportedly found in the victim's hair.

Media sources revealed that the suspect’s recorded footage dates back to 2008. He was previously arrested in October on suspicion of drugging another woman and stealing ¥40,000 (RM1,192) from her, but was released. He was then re-arrested in December for an alleged indecent assault. — AFP
