TOKYO, Dec 16 — Japan has lifted a rare megaquake advisory a week after a magnitude-7.5 earthquake struck off its northern coast, the weather agency said.

The December 8 quake triggered tsunami waves of up to 70cm and injured more than 40 people, but caused no major damage. Authorities had issued the advisory after warning of a small increased risk of a magnitude-8.0 or larger quake.

Japan Meteorological Agency official Issei Suganuma said the special warning period has ended, but urged residents to remain vigilant as earthquake risks persist. — AFP
