CHIBA, May 12 — A 15-year-old boy was arrested on Monday for allegedly stabbing an elderly woman to death on a street in Chiba, near Tokyo, the day before, police said, according to Kyodo News.

The junior high school student, who resides in the city, has confessed to fatally stabbing 84-year-old Yayoi Takahashi in the back shortly after 5pm on Sunday. Authorities believe there was no prior connection between the boy and the victim.

According to an investigative source, the teen told police he simply felt the urge to kill someone, and that the choice of victim was random.

Takahashi was discovered lying unresponsive and bleeding on the street in a residential area roughly one kilometre east of JR Tsuga Station. She was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
