JOHOR BAHRU, Sept 25 — The Johor government is stepping up control measures and implementing proactive initiatives to tackle the sharp rise in human-elephant conflicts reported over the past three years.

State Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said data from the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) showed cases had climbed from 103 in 2020 to 253 in 2023, with Kluang district recording the highest number of complaints to date.

He noted that although Perhilitan operates under federal jurisdiction, the state government has allocated special funding to strengthen control efforts.

“Perhilitan has only one professional team in Johor handling elephant-related cases, and in 2024 they successfully relocated 10 elephants to more suitable habitats. This year, with state-level coordination and financial support, 17 elephants have been relocated so far,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday.

Ling added that a major operation to capture and relocate more elephants, particularly in Kluang, is scheduled for October.

“The natural ecosystem continues to face threats from encroachment into wildlife habitats and oil palm replanting near forested areas. These factors have forced elephant herds to venture out of the forests in search of food,” he said. — Bernama
