CAMERON HIGHLANDS, Dec 5 — A school bus illegally ferrying foreign tourists was among 16 commercial vehicles seized in a joint Road Transport Department (RTD) operation today.

RTD senior enforcement director Datuk Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said the bus, driven by a local operator, had been transporting tourists from China and Singapore without proper permits for three years. The operation, conducted with the Immigration Department, followed public complaints and a week-long surveillance.

He said such violations pose serious safety risks given Cameron Highlands’ steep and narrow roads with heavy tourist traffic.

Of the 48 commercial vehicles inspected, 16 faced enforcement action and 51 notices were issued for offences such as misuse or absence of Motor Vehicle Licences (LKM), lack of insurance, and driving without a licence.

A total of 51 individuals, including 16 foreigners, were also detained for various offences, including lacking valid licences or Goods Driving Licences (GDL), and LKM misuse.

Muhammad Kifli said Pahang RTD has been directed to conduct weekly enforcement in the area, while a nationwide week-long operation targeting foreign-operated vehicles is underway with Immigration.

He said firm action will be taken not only against drivers but also against companies hiring unlicensed foreign drivers. — Bernama
