ALOR SETAR, June 27 — The Kedah Immigration Department (JIM) has detained a second man believed to be involved in a migrant smuggling syndicate during Ops Serkap at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex on Thursday.

In a statement, the department said the 36-year-old suspect was arrested by its Intelligence and Special Operations Division while he was present at the complex for immigration-related travel arrangements.

“The suspect has been handed over to the Enforcement Unit at the Bukit Kayu Hitam ICQS for further action under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 (ATIPSOM),” it said.

The court has granted a four-day remand order until June 29 to facilitate investigations.

The department added that the arrest was part of ongoing investigations into the smuggling of a Chinese national through the country’s border entry point on March 30.

It said the first suspect was earlier identified after entering Malaysia via the Padang Besar ICQS on April 24 before being detained. — Bernama
