PARIS, June 7 — US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth warned yesterday that Europe was facing what he described as an “invasion” of dangerous ideologies arriving by sea, drawing a link between immigration and the legacy of the D-Day landings during remarks in Normandy.
BALING, May 17 — A 73-year-old school bus driver in Kedah was forced to shift to providing paid passenger transport after a decline in student demand over the past two years, but his bus was later seized by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) for allegedly misusing its operating permit.
The bus was detained during a JPJ enforcement operation at the Gurun toll exit after it was found transporting 26 passengers from Taman Intan, Sungai Petani, to Bukit Jenun, Pendang, to attend a funeral.
Kedah JPJ director Stien Van Lutam said investigations showed the bus had not been used to ferry students for about two years due to insufficient demand, prompting the owner-driver to offer paid transport services instead.
He said although the bus had valid insurance and road tax, it breached licence conditions by carrying passengers other than schoolchildren.
The vehicle was seized under Section 80(1) of the Land Public Transport Act 2010 for an offence under Section 22(3) of the same Act, and the driver’s statement was recorded.
Van Lutam also said JPJ Kedah is stepping up enforcement operations ahead of the festive season, including the upcoming Hari Raya Aidiladha Special Operation 2026 from May 24 to 31, focusing on high-risk areas.
He added that the ongoing “Op Luxury” campaign targeting luxury vehicle violations has resulted in 23 seizures since July last year, involving vehicles such as Porsche, Mini Cooper and Mercedes-Benz models. — Bernama
