KOTA BHARU, May 27 — Kelantan police have confirmed that the actual ransom demanded in the kidnapping and extortion case involving a jewellery shop owner in Palekbang, Tumpat was 80 kilogrammes of gold—worth an estimated RM40 million—contrary to earlier reports which cited 30kg.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the information was provided by the 44-year-old victim in his statement to the police.

“Investigations also revealed that the suspects had been extorting the victim, who is from Tumpat, over an extended period,” he said when contacted yesterday.

According to Mohd Yusoff, the victim claimed the suspects had long been demanding protection money but refrained from reporting it due to fears for his family's safety.

The victim also alleged that he had previously handed over cash and jewellery worth millions of ringgit to the suspects.

“This case began as an extortion and escalated into a kidnapping when the victim refused to comply with further demands for money or gold,” he explained.

The incident came to public attention on May 20 when a video went viral showing the victim’s vehicle being blocked and forcibly taken away in a grey Suzuki Swift.
