MUNICH, May 8 — Vincent Kompany has urged Bayern Munich to quickly move on from their Champions League heartbreak against Paris Saint-Germain and focus on ending the season strongly with the German Cup still within reach.

Bayern, who have already secured the Bundesliga title and reached the German Cup final, were knocked out of Europe after a 1-1 draw with PSG in Munich on Wednesday, losing 6-5 on aggregate in the semi-finals.

“It’s natural to feel disappointed because it was a major objective and we invested a lot emotionally and physically,” Kompany told reporters today. “But from the following day, the focus has to shift towards the future.

“My responsibility is to guide that reaction and show how we respond.”

The Belgian coach has faced criticism for Bayern’s aggressive defensive approach against PSG, with some pointing to the high line that exposed gaps at the back during both legs.

Despite conceding 12 goals in their last four matches across all competitions, Kompany defended his team’s style of play, insisting he would not abandon an attacking philosophy as long as Bayern continued to outscore opponents.

The Bavarians have already broken the Bundesliga record for most goals scored in a single season with 116 goals and still have two league matches remaining. The previous record of 101 goals was set during the 1971/72 season.

“We Belgians are very pragmatic people,” Kompany said. “If your goal difference is a historic plus-81, then clearly you are doing many things right to avoid losing games.

“We are winning matches convincingly, and the goal difference proves the gap between us and our opponents.”

Bayern travel to face struggling VfL Wolfsburg tomorrow in their penultimate Bundesliga fixture before hosting 1. FC Cologne in the final game of the league campaign next week.

They will then head to Berlin for the German Cup final against VfB Stuttgart on May 23.

Kompany stressed the importance of showing the team has already turned the page on their European exit.

“We want to demonstrate that this disappointment is already behind us and that our attention is on what we can still accomplish, both in the coming weeks and in the future,” he added. — Reuters
