BANGKOK, April 24 — Thailand’s Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear a petition accusing 44 current and former opposition lawmakers of ethics violations over their 2021 move to amend a law protecting the monarchy from criticism, according to Thai media reports.
ALOR SETAR, March 21 — Ferry services to Langkawi will see a revised schedule after the Aidilfitri holidays בעקבות a more than 100 per cent increase in industrial diesel prices.
Ferry Line Ventures Sdn Bhd general manager, Dr Baharin Baharom, said the adjustment is necessary to minimise potential losses faced by ferry operators as operating costs continue to rise.
“At present, ferry operators in Langkawi charge 88 sen per nautical mile, which is considerably lower than the rates for other major islands such as Pulau Pangkor and Pulau Tioman, where fares can reach up to RM2 per nautical mile.
“As part of cost-control measures and to better match current demand, the existing schedule of five daily trips will be reduced to three,” he said in a statement yesterday.
He added that on March 17, ferry operators from Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak held discussions with the Ministry of Transport regarding proposed additional charges to offset rising fuel costs.
“However, the government has yet to make a final decision on the matter.
“Industrial diesel prices in Langkawi are higher compared to other major islands in the peninsula. We hope the government will consider a fair and sustainable solution,” he said.
Dr Baharin noted that the move is aimed at ensuring the long-term sustainability of Langkawi’s ferry industry while reducing the impact on the local tourism sector.
“We remain committed to delivering quality service to passengers, but it is equally important to ensure operational sustainability amid increasingly challenging cost pressures,” he said. — Bernama
