PARIS, June 7 — US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth warned yesterday that Europe was facing what he described as an “invasion” of dangerous ideologies arriving by sea, drawing a link between immigration and the legacy of the D-Day landings during remarks in Normandy.
TORONTO, May 10 — Lionel Messi scored once and provided two assists as Inter Miami CF returned to winning form with a 4-2 victory over Toronto FC in Major League Soccer yesterday.
Inter Miami bounced back strongly after last week’s 4-3 home defeat to Orlando City SC in the Florida derby, earning an impressive away win in Canada.
Messi delivered another standout performance as the victory lifted Miami to within one point of Eastern Conference leaders Nashville SC.
Argentina midfielder Rodrigo De Paul opened the scoring just before half-time, volleying home after his free-kick struck the wall and rebounded back into his path.
Miami doubled their advantage in the 56th minute when Messi found former FC Barcelona teammate Luis Suárez, who finished calmly to make it 2-0.
Messi set up Miami’s third goal in the 73rd minute, providing the assist for substitute Sergio Reguilón to score his first MLS goal.
Two minutes later, Messi capped his performance with a goal of his own. After De Paul surged down the right flank, his low cross found the 38-year-old, who guided a composed finish into the bottom corner beyond Toronto goalkeeper Luka Gavran.
Toronto threatened a dramatic comeback when Colombian substitute Emilio Aristizábal scored twice in the 82nd and 90th minutes, but Inter Miami held firm through 11 minutes of stoppage time to secure their sixth league win of the season. — AFP
