LONDON, May 9 — Liverpool manager Arne Slot admitted on Friday that the club is “disappointed” by Trent Alexander-Arnold’s decision to leave Anfield at the end of the season.

The 26-year-old England right-back, whose contract expires in June, confirmed his departure on Monday, describing it as “easily the hardest decision I’ve ever made in my life.” A lifelong Red, Alexander-Arnold’s future had been under heavy speculation, with strong links to Real Madrid following his role in Liverpool’s title-winning campaign.

Slot, who has yet to speak to Alexander-Arnold in person since the announcement, said they have only communicated via WhatsApp and plan to meet face-to-face on Friday to discuss the fallout from the decision, which has received mixed reactions.

“Like everyone who loves Liverpool, we’re disappointed to see him go — not just because he’s a top full-back, but also a great person,” Slot said.

The Dutch manager added that he’s accustomed to losing key players from his time at AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord, and remains confident that Liverpool will continue to thrive.

“When a top player leaves, another usually steps up — and I expect that will happen again here.”
