LOS ANGELES, Dec 7 — Spectacular lava fountains burst from Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano on Saturday, US volcanologists said, nearly a year after one of the world’s most active volcanoes began its latest eruptive phase.
LONDON, Sept 28 — Liverpool’s perfect Premier League run came to an end with a 2-1 defeat at Crystal Palace yesterday, while Manchester United suffered another blow in a 3-1 loss at Brentford.
Palace are now the league’s only unbeaten side, extending their club-record streak to 18 matches across all competitions, including three against Liverpool.
“These are the moments why we love football. The fans will enjoy a great Saturday evening,” said Palace manager Oliver Glasner. “We deserved it. Great performance, great game, great win.”
The reigning English champions were punished for another inconsistent display after relying on late goals to scrape through their opening five league victories.
Ismaila Sarr put Palace in front early after Liverpool failed to clear a corner. Federico Chiesa seemed to have salvaged a point for the Reds with an 87th-minute equaliser, but Nketiah struck almost at the death to seal Palace’s win.
The result lifts Palace to second place, just three points behind Liverpool. Arsenal could reclaim second and cut the gap to two points if they beat Newcastle today.
Brentford sink United
Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is still waiting for consecutive league wins nearly a year into his tenure after a shambolic defensive showing at Brentford.
Early errors from Harry Maguire and goalkeeper Altay Bayindir allowed Igor Thiago to net twice inside 20 minutes. Benjamin Sesko pulled one back with his first United goal before the break, but Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty for the second time this season.
Brentford sealed victory in stoppage time through Mathias Jensen, whose powerful strike beat Bayindir.
“We didn’t control the game. We played Brentford’s game,” Amorim admitted. “All the key moments went against us. We need to improve.”
City cruise with Esteve’s own goals
Manchester City thrashed Burnley 5-1, aided by two own goals from defender Maxime Esteve. After Esteve’s first mistake under pressure from Phil Foden, Burnley briefly levelled through Jadon Anthony.
City eventually broke clear as Matheus Nunes scored, Esteve diverted a cross into his own net again, and Erling Haaland added two late goals, taking his tally to 15 in nine appearances for club and country.
Chelsea falter again
Chelsea endured another red card setback, falling 3-1 to Brighton. Enzo Fernandez gave the Blues a deserved half-time lead, but Trevoh Chalobah’s dismissal on 53 minutes shifted momentum. Danny Welbeck equalised before adding a stoppage-time goal, with Maxim De Cuyper also on target.
Elsewhere, Tottenham needed a 94th-minute equaliser from Joao Palhinha to draw 1-1 with Wolves, while newly promoted Sunderland climbed to fourth after Omar Alderete’s strike beat Nottingham Forest.
At Elland Road, Bournemouth grabbed a dramatic point as Eli Kroupi’s late goal secured a 2-2 draw with Leeds. — AFP
