KUALA LUMPUR, March 20 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) detained a money changer yesterday in connection with a corruption and money laundering case involving Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob. However, he was later released after being diagnosed with a heart condition.

When contacted, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki stated that the suspect was initially remanded for two days to assist with the investigation but complained of heart-related issues.

He explained that the suspect was referred to a doctor, who diagnosed him with a heart embolism, leading to his release for further medical treatment.

Meanwhile, Azam mentioned that recording Ismail Sabri’s statement might require several more sessions before completion.

When questioned about the possibility of prosecution, he noted that several other individuals still needed to provide their statements.

This afternoon, the former prime minister was seen leaving the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya at 4:35 pm after spending over six hours giving his statement.

A MACC source confirmed that the statement recording process regarding corruption and money laundering allegations linked to Ismail Sabri would resume tomorrow morning.

He is currently under investigation for alleged misappropriation of funds related to the expenditure and procurement for the promotion and publicity of the Keluarga Malaysia programme during his tenure from August 2021 to November 2022. — Bernama
