KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 — A Tan Sri, currently under investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for alleged misappropriation of sukuk funds tied to a Klang Valley highway project, is expected to be summoned for questioning soon.

The individual, believed to be a highway concessionaire, was recently discharged from a private hospital and is also being investigated for owning foreign assets and involvement in high-stakes gambling worth millions of ringgit.

According to Astro Awani, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the individual has yet to provide a statement due to recent medical treatment.

“No statement has been recorded yet as he was undergoing medical treatment, but I’ve been informed he has since been discharged. My officers will be contacting him soon to arrange an interview,” Azam said yesterday.

While describing the Tan Sri as a key figure in the investigation, Azam added that MACC has already gathered statements from 45 other witnesses.

“He is among the individuals we have yet to question, but we’ve obtained important testimonies from others. Whether we’ll need more witnesses after speaking to him depends on the outcome,” he said.

Sources confirmed that the MACC had obtained medical verification before moving forward with the next phase of questioning.

The case revolves around the suspected misuse of sukuk bond proceeds originally intended for highway construction.

On June 3 last year, MACC announced the seizure of approximately RM143 million in assets belonging to the individual.

These included 14 personal bank accounts holding RM4.5 million, eight company accounts with RM33 million, a luxury condo and land worth RM24.5 million, nine luxury cars valued at RM7.65 million, designer watches worth RM25 million, handbags worth RM3 million, and jewellery and diamonds estimated at RM6 million.

Also confiscated were four horses valued at RM400,000, premium alcoholic beverages worth RM3 million, foreign assets exceeding RM15 million, and items linked to gambling activities amounting to RM20 million.

Azam confirmed that asset declaration notices have been issued to the Tan Sri and other parties involved.
