PARIS, May 16 — French President Emmanuel Macron announced yesterday that he had spoken with Pope Leo XIV for the first time, discussing efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine and Gaza.

During their “first exchange,” the two leaders focused on initiatives to silence weapons wherever conflicts persist globally, with particular emphasis on securing a lasting and solid peace in Ukraine and Gaza, Macron said on X.

“We share the goal of reconciling the fight against poverty with the protection of the planet,” the French president added, noting that he had “once again congratulated” the pope on his recent election as head of the Catholic Church.

Although Macron is not expected to attend Pope Leo’s inaugural mass in Rome on Sunday morning, France’s Prime Minister François Bayrou will be present. — AFP
