LOS ANGELES, Dec 7 — Spectacular lava fountains burst from Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano on Saturday, US volcanologists said, nearly a year after one of the world’s most active volcanoes began its latest eruptive phase.
BUTTERWORTH, Sept 16 — About 10,000 visitors are expected to converge at PICCA@Butterworth Arena today for the 2025 Malaysia Day celebration, themed Malaysia Madani: Rakyat Disantuni, in a patriotic gathering for the northern region.
The event goes beyond commemoration, uniting Malaysians from all walks of life in honouring cultural diversity, national unity, and shared history — the foundation of the nation’s strength.
Festivities begin at 9 am with the Malaysia Day 2025 Exhibition Menelusuri Zaman, featuring showcases by government agencies on Malaysia’s historical journey and future aspirations. The Penang State Public Library Corporation highlights key moments in history, while the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) promotes its Safe Internet Campaign. Visitors can also explore vintage broadcast equipment from Penang RTM, try being a DJ, or view curated photo displays from JAPEN and Bernama celebrating Malaysia Day.
Living traditions take centre stage with demonstrations of traditional foods such as tapioca, salted fish, and heritage kuih, alongside exhibitions of traditional attire and tools. A family colouring contest adds a playful and creative dimension for younger participants.
In the evening, the spotlight turns to a cultural showcase at 8.30 pm featuring Rentak Tradisi Pulau Mutiara (The Rhythm of Penang’s Traditions) — a 30-minute performance blending Joget Joghee, Chinese Opera, and Boria, representing Penang’s multicultural heritage.
A key highlight will be the ceremonial signing of the Malaysia Day 2025 Commemorative Book by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas (on behalf of Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg), and Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya (representing Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor).
The night will close with a grand musical finale, showcasing Malaysia’s “Queen of Rock” Ella, together with Suki Low, Roshini Balachandran, and talents from Sabah and Sarawak — Dabra Sia and Rezza Shah. Their performances, accompanied by the Malaysian Traditional Orchestra from Istana Budaya, will unite instruments from diverse ethnic groups in a powerful tribute to Malaysia’s harmony.
Penang Governor Tun Ramli Ngah Talib and Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, as host of the national-level celebration, will grace the event alongside members of the Federal Cabinet. — Bernama
