BUKIT MERTAJAM, Sept 15 — Police seized 135 motorcycles and issued 614 summonses during an integrated operation, Op Tutup Samseng Jalanan Bersepadu, at the North-South Expressway (PLUS) exit in Jalan Permatang Pauh, Seberang Jaya, early yesterday.

According to the Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) district police headquarters (IPD), six individuals were arrested under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, while another three were detained by the SPT IPD Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division after testing positive for methamphetamine and ketamine.

“The operation was launched to curb illegal activities of mat rempit in the area. A total of 400 motorcycles were inspected, with 135 confiscated and 614 summonses issued for various traffic offences.

“Several groups of teenagers on motorcycles and cars were found gathering near PLUS and the Permatang Pauh exit to watch illegal street races,” police said in a statement on Facebook last night.

The statement added that the races, held during the holiday weekend, caused inconvenience to highway users as most riders were speeding recklessly on public roads.

Police also noted that the loud noise from modified exhausts, riders performing wheelies at high speed, zigzagging through traffic, and even going against traffic flow posed serious danger to both the bikers and other road users. — Bernama
