KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 13 — Malaysia suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat to Hong Kong in their opening Group B match at the 2025 Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championship (BAMTC) in Qingdao, China.

The mixed doubles pair of Hoo Pang Ron and Cheng Su Yin struggled in the opening match, losing 21-17, 17-21, 11-21 to Hong Kong’s Tang Chun Man and Ng Tsz Yau in 49 minutes. However, women’s singles shuttler K. Letshanaa kept Malaysia in the fight, securing a 21-18, 21-18 win over Saloni Samirbhai Mehta.

Hopes of taking the lead were dashed when men’s singles player Justin Hoh lost 19-21, 16-21 to Lee Cheuk Yiu. Women’s doubles pair Go Pei Kee and Teoh Mei Xing then fell 17-21, 14-21 to Yeung Nga Ting and Yeung Pui Lam, sealing Hong Kong’s victory at 3-1.

In the final match, men’s doubles duo Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun salvaged a win, defeating Hung Kuei Chun and Lui Chun Wai 21-13, 21-11 to make the final score 3-2.

With this loss, Malaysia sits at the bottom of Group B with no points, while Indonesia and Hong Kong lead with one point each. Only the top two teams will qualify for the quarter-finals, making Malaysia’s final group-stage match against Indonesia tomorrow a must-win encounter. — Bernama
