WASHINGTON, June 12 — The White House stated on Tuesday that President Donald Trump will not tolerate “mob rule,” as demonstrations against his immigration policies continue to spread across the U.S., despite a military-backed crackdown in Los Angeles.
KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 — Malaysia has made history by being unanimously elected as President of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) for the 2025–2029 term.
Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming shared the news on Facebook, stating that all 193 UN member states supported Malaysia’s appointment. The official announcement was made during the Bureau Officers Election session at the UN-Habitat Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya.
UN-Habitat, headquartered in Nairobi and established in 1975, became a full-fledged UN programme in 2001. It serves as the highest global authority on sustainable urbanisation and human settlements, convening every four years to shape global urban policy.
As President, Malaysia will collaborate closely with the UN-Habitat Executive Board and international partners to promote inclusive, climate-resilient, and sustainable urban development around the world.
In his address to the assembly, Nga called on member states to intensify efforts in implementing the New Urban Agenda, stressing the importance of strengthening multilateralism and advancing the Habitat Agenda.
He also advocated for cooperation based on the People-Public-Private Partnership (4Ps) model, highlighting the importance of sharing knowledge, fostering partnerships, and ensuring that no one and no place is left behind in an increasingly urbanised world.
“During my tenure as Assembly President, let us make UN-Habitat a platform for both thought and action. Let us ensure that local governments, women, youth, civil society, and vulnerable communities have their voices heard when shaping policies and action plans,” he said.
Nga also announced that a Joint Bureau meeting will be held in Penang this October, alongside the Asia-Pacific Conference of Ministers of Housing and Urban Development. The meeting aims to evaluate the Assembly's outcomes and align efforts with the UN-Habitat Strategic Plan 2026–2029.
Additionally, Malaysia will take an active role in the 13th World Urban Forum, set to take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, in May next year. — Bernama
