TOKYO, Jan 22 — Japan has halted the restart of the world’s largest nuclear power plant just hours after it began, though the reactor remains “stable,” the operator said.
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 — The Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) has appealed to Red Cross and Red Crescent leaders worldwide to unite in urging decision-makers to push for a ceasefire, raise funds, and support humanitarian operations in Gaza.
MRC national chairman, the Tunku Temenggong of Kedah, Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz Almarhum Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, said humanitarian workers in Gaza were being targeted and killed, stressing that this must be stopped and brought to global attention.
“As we celebrate our collaboration as a Southeast Asian humanitarian network, it is vital to remember those most in need. I am especially mindful of our brothers and sisters in Gaza, who are enduring immense suffering.
“Humanitarian workers are being attacked and killed, and this must end. We must highlight these atrocities and do everything we can to ease and ultimately stop the terrible suffering there. Let us carry forward the renewed spirit of solidarity and compassion, and may the seas that connect us continue to symbolize unity in service to humanity,” she said in her speech at the closing dinner of the 22nd Southeast Asia Red Cross and Red Crescent Leaders Meeting, which also marked the launch of MRC’s 75th Anniversary Coffee Table Book last night.
The dinner was attended by the Prime Minister’s wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad and Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong.
Commenting on the three-day meeting themed The Seas that Unite Us, Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz said it reflected on challenges faced by the region, including disaster preparedness, climate change, health emergencies and displacement, while underlining the importance of cross-border collaboration in humanitarian action.
Earlier, Dr Wan Azizah launched the Malaysian Red Crescent’s 75th Anniversary Coffee Table Book. The publication, available to the public for a RM250 donation, will channel proceeds towards supporting humanitarian services.
The event was supported by Yayasan Raja Zarith Sofiah Negeri Johor, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Prime Minister’s Department and the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA).
According to an MRC statement, the event strengthened partnerships with governments, corporate partners, donors and international stakeholders, while deepening regional solidarity among Southeast Asia’s Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies.
“The event also highlighted MRC’s 75-year humanitarian legacy and encouraged greater public participation, particularly inspiring youth and communities to contribute to the humanitarian cause,” it said. — Bernama
