KENINGAU, Jan 17 — A recreational rafting outing ended in tragedy when a man drowned after falling from a raft into the Sepulut River at Kabulongou Earth here on Friday.

Nabawan Fire and Rescue Station (Bomba) chief Rudy Mekii said the victim, believed to be in his 40s, was discovered on the riverbank by members of the public and later pronounced dead by officers from the Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM).

He said Bomba received an emergency call at 12.40pm and immediately dispatched a team to the scene, located about 53 kilometres from the station.

“Access to the area was challenging due to narrow routes and unpaved road conditions,” he said in a statement.

Rescuers arrived at the location at 2.45pm and were informed that the victim had already been found unconscious by the riverside. Firefighters then retrieved the body from the river before medical officers conducted an examination.

“The victim was confirmed dead at the scene, and the body was subsequently handed over to the police for further investigation,” Rudy said, adding that the operation concluded at 6.30pm. — The Borneo Post
