ROME, Oct 13 — Marc Marquez has undergone successful surgery on his right shoulder following his crash at the Indonesia MotoGP, his Ducati team announced today.

The Spanish rider, who clinched his seventh premier-class title in Japan last month, sustained a fracture and ligament injuries after crashing in Lombok the following week.

“Marc Marquez successfully underwent surgery at the Ruber Internacional Hospital in Madrid, Spain,” Ducati said in a statement.

Doctors who re-examined him a week after the incident found that the coracoid fracture and ligament damage had not stabilised sufficiently despite immobilisation. “To prevent long-term instability, the medical team decided to perform surgical stabilisation and repair of the acromioclavicular ligaments,” Ducati added.

The team said Marquez will continue his recovery, with his return to competition depending on his rehabilitation progress.

Marquez had already been ruled out of this month’s Australia and Malaysia rounds, with the season concluding in Portugal and Valencia in November.

The 32-year-old, who has battled multiple injuries throughout his career — including a serious right arm fracture in 2020 that nearly ended his career — will be replaced by test rider Michele Pirro at the Australian MotoGP this weekend. — AFP
