LOS ANGELES, Dec 7 — Spectacular lava fountains burst from Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano on Saturday, US volcanologists said, nearly a year after one of the world’s most active volcanoes began its latest eruptive phase.
LOMBOK, Oct 5 — Newly crowned world champion Marc Marquez fears he may have suffered a fracture after being thrown off his Ducati in a high-speed crash during the opening lap of today’s Indonesia MotoGP at the Mandalika circuit in Lombok.
The incident occurred when pole-sitter Marco Bezzecchi of Aprilia collided with the back of Marquez while trying to regain ground, sending both riders tumbling into the gravel. Rookie Fermin Aldeguer went on to win the chaotic race.
Both Marquez and Bezzecchi were able to walk away, though the Spanish seven-time world champion was seen clutching his shoulder. Ducati later confirmed that Marquez sustained an injury to his right collarbone and will fly to Madrid for further medical examinations amid concerns of a possible fracture.
“Something is broken, I can feel it,” the 32-year-old said in a video shared by the official MotoGP site.
“This is racing — these things happen. It wasn’t my mistake this time; Marco Bezzecchi already came to me and apologised. Unlucky for me, but we’ll go back to Madrid, see what the doctors say, and focus on recovering as soon as possible.”
Marquez also posted a photo of himself with his arm in a sling.
The Spaniard, who has battled multiple injuries throughout his career — including a serious right arm break in 2020 that nearly ended his racing days — returned to top form this season, capturing his first MotoGP world title since 2019.
He sealed the championship last weekend at Motegi, Japan, with five races still remaining. — AFP
