LOS ANGELES, Dec 7 — Spectacular lava fountains burst from Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano on Saturday, US volcanologists said, nearly a year after one of the world’s most active volcanoes began its latest eruptive phase.
MOSCOW, Sept 19 — A massive 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka peninsula early Friday, shaking buildings and prompting a tsunami warning that was later lifted.
Footage shared on Russian social media showed light fixtures and furniture swaying inside homes, while another clip captured a parked car rocking on the street.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake hit 128 kilometres east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the regional capital, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres. Russia’s state geophysical service provided a slightly lower estimate of 7.4 and recorded at least five aftershocks.
The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially issued an alert for potential hazardous waves along nearby coastlines, but later confirmed the danger had passed.
“This morning is once again testing the resilience of Kamchatka residents,” regional governor Vladimir Solodov wrote on Telegram, adding there were no reports of damage and urging people to stay calm.
Kamchatka sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a seismic hotspot that experiences frequent quakes. In July, an 8.8-magnitude earthquake off the same coast triggered a tsunami that swept part of a coastal village into the sea and sparked alerts across the Pacific. — AFP
