MELAKA, March 22 — Melaka Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Rais Yasin has urged the public to refrain from open burning during the current hot and dry spell.

He explained that the measure is necessary to prevent fire risks that could rapidly escalate under existing conditions.

The Department of Environment (DOE) previously issued a similar warning, advising against open burning due to current unpredictable weather. “I hope all Melaka residents take these precautions and avoid such activities,” Rais said during his Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house at Hang Jebat Stadium in Krubong today.

The event, which drew approximately 25,000 guests, was attended by Melaka Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Dr. Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.

Rais, the Paya Rumput assemblyman, added that the state government and relevant agencies remain on high alert for potential droughts and are monitoring the situation to ensure public safety. “I am confident that all parties are prepared for any eventuality,” he said. — Bernama
