JMIAMI, Oct 14 — Lionel Messi has rejoined the Argentina national team and could feature in Tuesday’s friendly against Puerto Rico, coach Lionel Scaloni said, following the star forward’s absence from the 1-0 win over Venezuela to play for Inter Miami over the weekend.
Messi netted twice in Inter Miami’s 4-0 Major League Soccer victory over Atlanta United on Saturday. Scaloni said he would assess the 38-year-old’s fitness before deciding whether to include him in the lineup against Puerto Rico.
“I saw Messi play on Saturday, and from what I know, he finished the match in good shape. I haven’t spoken to him yet,” Scaloni told reporters on Monday.
“We’ll have our final training session before the match tomorrow, and as always, I’ll talk to him beforehand. If he’s fit, he’ll play,” he added.
The friendly against Puerto Rico will be held at Inter Miami’s Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, after being relocated from Chicago due to security and logistical reasons. — Reuters
