PUTRAJAYA, Feb 25 — Immediate technical measures have been implemented to resolve the water overflow at Jalan Abang Haji Openg in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI), after an incident on February 22 that drew attention on social media, the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) said.

The ministry explained that the actions form part of rectification works under the project to complete the remaining development of the Federal Park Administrative Zone in Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur (Phase 1B), which is slated for full completion by July 5, 2027.

The incident, captured in a viral video, triggered criticism of the project undertaken by the National Landscape Department (JLN) together with the Public Works Department (JKR) of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, with claims that it had led to recurring floods in nearby areas.

In a statement today, KPKT said preliminary findings showed the overflow was caused by unusually heavy rainfall, limited capacity of public drains and surface runoff from the construction site.

A site audit by JKR identified several urgent corrective steps, including enhancing the temporary retention pond (silt trap), removing accumulated sediment, maintaining the temporary drainage network, adding erosion control measures and redirecting water to the designated discharge point.

The ministry noted that utility pipes crossing the public drain had also reduced its capacity, contributing to the localised overflow, and that repair works are ongoing.

It added that monitoring of slope stability, retaining walls and nearby infrastructure has been intensified, while JKR is reviewing the Erosion and Sediment Control Plan (ESCP) to ensure it can handle rainfall beyond the original design parameters.

JLN expressed appreciation to residents for their feedback and apologised for any inconvenience caused during the construction period, assuring that updates will be shared periodically. — Bernama
