KUALA LUMPUR, March 24 — The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), along with related agencies, is intensifying its preparedness to protect Malaysia’s food security amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia and persistent hot weather conditions.

Its minister, Mohamad Sabu, said efforts will focus on improving supply management efficiency, strengthening the agro-food value chain, and introducing mitigation measures to reduce the impact of external pressures on the local market.

He noted that global uncertainties stemming from the West Asia conflict could disrupt supply chains, with rising oil prices and logistics costs potentially driving up food prices.

“At the same time, the country is facing challenges from hot weather and climate change, which may affect agricultural productivity and domestic food output,” he said in a Facebook post.

Despite these challenges, Mohamad assured that essential food supplies for this year’s Aidilfitri celebration will remain stable, sufficient, and available at reasonable prices. He attributed this to coordinated efforts between KPKM, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), government agencies, and industry players, ensuring a steady and adequate food supply.

“The Madani government remains committed to ensuring that food supplies are sufficient, stable, and accessible to the people under all circumstances,” he added.

Mohamad also urged all stakeholders — including industry players, farmers, breeders, and consumers — to continue fulfilling their roles in strengthening a resilient and sustainable national food system.

“Insya-Allah, with the cooperation and readiness of all parties, we will continue to safeguard the nation’s food security for the well-being of the people,” he said. — Bernama
