KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 — Malaysia’s supply of essential goods remains stable despite uncertainties affecting global supply chains, according to Mydin Mohamed Holdings Bhd managing director Datuk Dr Ameer Ali Mydin.

He said strategic planning by retailers and the continued smooth operation of the local agricultural sector have helped ensure that food supplies remain secure for the domestic market.

Ameer Ali noted that planting and harvesting activities are continuing without disruption, supported by adequate supplies of agricultural inputs such as fertilisers, reducing the risk of shortages in the near future.

“At present, there are no signs of any supply disruptions. Farming activities are proceeding as usual, and fertiliser supplies remain sufficient,” he said during Bernama TV’s Ruang Bicara programme, “Strengthening the Retail Industry, Driving the National Economy”, last night.

He added that Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu had also confirmed that urea fertiliser supplies are adequate for the current planting season.

Regarding imported goods, Ameer Ali said retailers have implemented forward-purchasing strategies to maintain steady stocks of essential imported products.

He also advised consumers against panic buying, stressing that supply stability covers not only food products but also items such as textiles and clothing.

“Supplies are currently stable and sufficient. There is no need for excessive concern, but consumers should avoid unnecessary waste and panic purchasing,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ameer Ali welcomed the substantial allocation for the Rahmah Cash Aid (STR) and Rahmah Basic Aid (SARA) programmes under Budget 2026, saying the assistance would generate positive economic spillover effects.

He said the initiative would help boost consumer spending at a time when purchasing power remains relatively weak, benefiting retailers and small businesses alike.

“When financial aid is distributed, consumer spending increases, businesses become busier, and the overall economy gains from the added activity,” he said.

Separately, Mydin plans to expand its presence this year by opening more than 20 new outlets under a smaller community-store concept, aimed at providing residents with convenient access to a full range of essential goods. — Bernama
