GAZA CITY, March 19 — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Israel’s latest strikes on Gaza were "only the beginning," vowing that future negotiations with Hamas would happen "only under fire."

The overnight attacks, the largest since a January truce, killed over 400 people, according to Gaza’s health ministry. Netanyahu justified the strikes by accusing Hamas of refusing to release Israeli hostages, saying military pressure was essential for their return.

Witnesses reported heavy bombing, with one Gaza resident describing the devastation as “hell.” Hamas has not responded militarily but called on allies to pressure the U.S. to halt Israel’s assault.

International condemnation followed, with leaders from Germany, Iran, Egypt, Russia, and China warning against escalation. The UN also expressed concern, while families of Israeli hostages protested, fearing for their loved ones.

Meanwhile, Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels fired a missile at Israel, which was intercepted. The ongoing war, triggered by Hamas's October 2023 attack, has left over 48,000 Gazans and 1,218 Israelis dead. — BernamaResidents navigate the rubble of a building destroyed in an overnight Israeli strike in Jabalia, northern Gaza Strip, yesterday. — AFP pic
