NEW YORK, March 9 — New York police have confirmed that a device thrown near an anti-Islam protest outside the mayor’s residence in Manhattan was a functional improvised explosive device (IED) that could have caused serious injury or death.

Authorities said two devices were thrown during the incident on Saturday. The suspect, identified as Emir Balat, allegedly shouted “Allahu akbar” while deploying the device near police officers at the protest against public Muslim prayer.

Police said the device consisted of jars wrapped in tape and filled with nuts, bolts and screws — components commonly used in homemade explosives.

Balat and another man, Ibrahim Kayumi, were arrested at the scene. Kayumi is believed to have handed the device to Balat before it was thrown.

The protest, organised by far-right influencer Jake Lang outside Gracie Mansion, drew about 20 supporters and around 125 counter-protesters.

The NYPD Bomb Squad later confirmed the device was not a hoax but a real explosive. Investigations are ongoing with the FBI and the US Attorney’s Office through the Joint Terrorism Task Force. — AFP
