BEIJING, April 24 — China firmly rejected claims of ongoing trade negotiations with the United States on Thursday, calling them "groundless," following US President Donald Trump's optimistic remarks about a potential deal to reduce the steep tariffs he has imposed on Chinese imports.

The two economic superpowers remain entrenched in a deepening trade conflict, sparked by Trump’s imposition of tariffs that now reach as high as 145 per cent on various Chinese products.

In response, Beijing has slapped counter-tariffs of up to 125 per cent on US imports.

The escalating tariff war — which Trump argues is a countermeasure against unfair trade practices and an effort to revive American manufacturing — has unsettled global markets and stirred concerns about a looming worldwide recession.

China dismissed Trump’s claims that trade negotiations were taking place daily.

“As the authority overseeing foreign economic and trade affairs, I want to make it clear that no economic or trade talks are currently underway between China and the United States,” said Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesman He Yadong during a press briefing.

“Any statements regarding progress in China-US trade discussions are baseless and lack any factual foundation,” he added.

He also urged the US to correct what China sees as misguided actions and to demonstrate genuine willingness to return to fair and equal negotiations.

Despite this, President Trump told reporters on Wednesday that the US would secure a “fair deal with China” and, when asked about ongoing discussions, replied, “everything’s active,” further claiming that communication with Beijing occurs “every day.” — AFP
