KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 9 — Johor Zoo’s highly anticipated night safari is set to open by the fourth quarter of this year, state executive councillor Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor confirmed.
The state government has allocated RM5 million for phase two of the zoo’s upgrades, scheduled to begin in the first quarter of the year. Enhancements will improve facilities, making 80% of the zoo accessible to the elderly, individuals with disabilities, and parents with strollers.
Additionally, Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) plans to invest RM10 million in a new car park opposite the zoo to accommodate growing visitor numbers. Authorities are also considering using a nearby Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque parking area and adding a pedestrian crossing for safer access.
Further plans include 200 additional parking bays at the Ayer Molek Prison site, which currently serves as the zoo’s main parking area. MBJB is also exploring transforming the old prison into a weekend night market to complement the night safari experience.
Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi initially proposed the night safari to boost zoo tourism. Since its reopening on August 31, 2024, after RM9.6 million in renovations, Johor Zoo has welcomed 500,000 visitors and now houses 373 animals from 65 species. — Bernama
