MADRID, Jan 18 — Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said a US military move to seize Greenland “would make Vladimir Putin the happiest man in the world,” according to an interview published on Sunday.

Sánchez warned that any US use of force against Denmark’s Arctic territory would undermine Nato and effectively justify Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“If we talk about Greenland, I must say that a US invasion of that territory would make Putin the happiest person on earth. Why? Because it would legitimise his attempted invasion of Ukraine,” Sánchez told La Vanguardia.

He added that such action would spell the end of Nato. “If the United States were to resort to force, it would be the death knell for Nato, and Putin would be doubly pleased.”

US President Donald Trump on Saturday appeared to shift strategy on Greenland, pledging to impose escalating tariffs on European allies until Washington is allowed to purchase the island.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said an additional 10 per cent import tariff would be imposed from February 1 on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland and the United Kingdom — all countries already facing tariffs introduced by his administration.

The tariffs would rise to 25 per cent from June 1 and remain in place until an agreement is reached for the United States to buy Greenland, he wrote.

Trump has repeatedly insisted that he will accept nothing short of ownership of Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory. Leaders in both Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected the idea, stressing that the island is not for sale and does not wish to become part of the United States. — Reuters
