KUALA LUMPUR, April 18 — Malaysia has deployed a military medical team to Myanmar under Operation Starlight III, a humanitarian mission launched in response to the earthquake that struck the country on March 28.

Director-General of the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) Health Services, Lieutenant General Datuk Dr Zulkeffeli Mat Jusoh, said the 69-member team includes 16 officers and 53 personnel from various specialisations. Among them are members of the Forward Anaesthesia and Surgical Team (FAST) from the Malaysian Field Hospital and personnel from the Royal Engineers Regiment (RAJD).

Led by Colonel Dr Ahmad Farhan Ahmad Fuad, the team is equipped with a Level Two Field Hospital, medical and communication supplies, technical tools, a four-wheel-drive vehicle, and two 18-tonne trucks.

“The initial plan is to operate the field hospital for one month, after which we will evaluate on-site conditions to determine any further needs,” Dr Zulkeffeli said during the send-off ceremony at the Subang Air Base today.

He added that while the hospital is intended to be set up in Myanmar’s Sagaing region, the location could be adjusted depending on developments on the ground. The team took 72 hours to prepare the mission, considering challenges such as limited water and electricity supply and ensuring security in the designated area.

“The Myanmar government has assured us that the area where we are stationed is secure,” he noted.

The mission departed from Subang Air Base aboard two Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Airbus A400M aircraft, which took off at 4.45am and 5.15am, and are scheduled to arrive at Mandalay International Airport at 7.30am and 8.00am (Malaysian time), respectively.

Upon arrival, the team will begin providing immediate medical assistance to victims in the Sagaing district, said Dr Ahmad Farhan. — Bernama
