SYDNEY, June 4 — Tech giant Meta has criticised Australia’s “grossly unfair” proposal to require social media companies to pay for news content, saying it strongly opposes the draft legislation.
SINGAPORE, May 27 — Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah progressed to the second round of the Singapore Open 2026 today, marking a strong return to competition after a recent injury layoff.
The world No. 2 duo defeated Chinese Taipei’s Hu Li Fang-Jheng Yu Chieh 20-22, 21-16, 21-15 in a 51-minute three-game battle.
Despite the victory, Thinaah said she was not fully satisfied with their performance, particularly in terms of strategy and on-court coordination.
“I am not so happy overall for the performance because there is a lot that we could improve and also do better from the match, especially our strategy-wise and also rotation part. But of course I feel relieved and also very happy to be back on court and finish the match today safely,” she told Bernama in the mixed zone at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, defending men’s doubles champions Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik also moved into the second round after a solid straight-sets win over French brothers Christo Popov and Toma Junior Popov, 21-17, 21-15.
The pair credited their success to composure and smart tactical play despite sustained pressure from their opponents.
Also advancing were mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei, who overcame compatriots Hoo Pang Ron and Lai Pei Jing 21-16, 21-19 in a 40-minute encounter.
In the women’s singles, Malaysia’s K. Letshanaa bowed out in the first round after a 21-19, 15-21, 17-21 defeat to China’s world No. 4 and Olympic champion Chen Yu Fei in a 66-minute match, despite taking the opening set.
