WASHINGTON, June 12 — The White House stated on Tuesday that President Donald Trump will not tolerate “mob rule,” as demonstrations against his immigration policies continue to spread across the U.S., despite a military-backed crackdown in Los Angeles.
GEORGE TOWN, June 4 — The Penang state government has pledged to implement effective traffic management measures to minimise disruptions during the construction of several major infrastructure projects.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow acknowledged that initiatives such as the Penang South Islands (PSI) reclamation, the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT), and the Juru–Sungai Dua Elevated Highway may lead to temporary traffic congestion. However, he emphasised that such inconveniences are part and parcel of development.
“Years ago, during a visit to Gamuda in Kuala Lumpur where an LRT project was underway, we were introduced to their comprehensive traffic management strategies during the construction phase,” he said.
Chow expressed confidence that contractors involved in Penang’s upcoming projects will adopt similar approaches, highlighting the importance of maintaining the same number of traffic lanes throughout the construction period.
“Even when certain portions of the road are cordoned off, contractors will need to create additional space to ensure that the original number of lanes remains available to road users,” he explained.
He made these remarks while addressing questions at the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI) Northern Annual Luncheon Dialogue 2025, attended by MICCI Northern Branch Chairman Datuk Brian Tan Guan Hooi and around 200 representatives from various industries.
Chow added that with proper traffic management and the cooperation of road users, the state is confident it can alleviate congestion and ensure a smoother commute during the construction phase.
He confirmed that construction of the Penang LRT project is slated to begin in the third quarter of this year, with completion expected in six to seven years. Meanwhile, the Juru–Sungai Dua Elevated Highway is scheduled to start by year-end.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in his Budget 2025 announcement on October 18 last year, revealed several key projects for Penang, including the Juru–Sungai Dua Elevated Highway, Mutiara Line LRT, expansion of the Penang International Airport (LTAPP), and the Batu Kawan Industrial Park 3.
The 29.5km Mutiara Line LRT will consist of 21 stations strategically located to improve connectivity between Penang Island and the mainland, ease road congestion, and enhance accessibility.
On the PSI front, Chow reported continued progress, with 60.71 hectares of land already reclaimed over the past 18 months.
He added that the state is awaiting positive updates from the federal government regarding incentive packages for potential industrial land buyers.
The PSI, also known as Silicon Island, is a 930.78-hectare reclamation project spearheaded by the Penang government. — Bernama
