GEORGE TOWN, Dec 3 — The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has lodged police and MCMC reports over a viral TikTok video it says falsely accuses the council of misconduct involving a shophouse project in the Northeast District.

MBPP said the Dec 1 video contains baseless, biased and defamatory allegations that could mislead the public and damage its reputation.

Police have opened an investigation, and the council said it is prepared to cooperate fully.

According to MBPP, the Planning Permission application for the development was submitted in June 2016, with notices issued to 10 neighbouring landowners, none of whom objected. The project was approved by the One Stop Centre Committee in February 2017, with the building plan finalised in October 2021 and work commencing in December 2022.

The project comprises eight three-storey shophouses on Jalan Kampung Relau and another block on Lorong Relau 3, with Traffic Impact and Fire Department approvals obtained even before Planning Permission was endorsed.

MBPP urged the public to verify information before spreading claims. The viral video, titled Tiada Perjuangan Tanpa Pengorbanan, questioned the approval of a commercial project beside a residential area. — Bernama
