GEORGE TOWN, Dec 30 — The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is reviewing the possibility of allowing pet-friendly malls on the island, citing the need to balance public interest and community sensitivities.

MBPP said there are currently no specific rules on bringing pets into malls, prompting its study. Earlier, Mayor Datuk A. Rajendran visited Gurney Paragon Mall after Penang Amanah raised concerns about Muslim sensitivities toward pets, especially dogs.

The mall presented its house rules for the two designated pet-friendly days — Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Pets under 15kg must be in strollers or carriers, kept with their owners, wear pet diapers, use designated lifts and have waste properly disposed of.

MBPP proposed clearer signage and tighter enforcement, stressing that the mall must ensure full compliance to maintain cleanliness, order and harmony.
