GEORGE TOWN, May 17 — A 55-year-old factory engineer lost RM300,000 after falling victim to a bogus online investment scheme advertised on Facebook.

According to Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad, the victim filed a report yesterday, claiming he had been duped by a syndicate known as NBMAX.

“In early April, the victim came across a Facebook advertisement promising high returns from stock trading investments. He later contacted a woman via WhatsApp, who persuaded him to participate.

“He was instructed to download the NBMAX app, register as a member, and begin investing,” Hamzah said in a statement today.

The victim proceeded to make seven fund transfers to an account registered under NB Management Sdn Bhd.

However, when he attempted to deposit another RM52,800 at a bank counter, bank staff intervened and warned him that he might be the target of a scam.

Following the alert, the man lodged a police report. The case is currently being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. — Bernama
