GEORGE TOWN, May 5 — The Penang Hill cable car project is progressing smoothly, with the first ropeway tower set for installation by the end of June, according to Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) general manager Datuk Cheok Lay Leng.

Currently 6.5 per cent complete, the project involves caisson piling at four main sites, including three cable car stations — Garden, Turn, and Hill — and a multi-storey car park near the Botanic Gardens. Twelve out of 33 caisson points along the route have been completed, with towers being fabricated off-site for phased delivery.

To reduce environmental impact, the number of towers has been limited to 15, with only five inside the forest reserve. The car park site has already been cleared, with ground and environmental measures underway.

Although the RM245 million project is led by Hartasuma Sdn Bhd under a public-private partnership, PHC is monitoring progress and issuing public safety updates. Completion is targeted for end-2026, with operations expected by mid-2027 following safety checks.
