KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 — Malaysia’s national sepak takraw squad delivered a commendable performance and showcased remarkable resilience in the final match of the 2025 Asian Cup Sepak Takraw Championship, which concluded yesterday.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim praised the team’s efforts, expressing his confidence in their future success despite the defeat to Thailand.

“Today’s loss does not signify a permanent failure. I believe the national regu will return stronger and more united in upcoming championships. Thank you for your unwavering spirit and dedication in striving to bring pride to Malaysia,” he shared in a Facebook post yesterday.

Malaysia finished as runners-up in the team regu event after falling 0-2 to Thailand in the final held at Titiwangsa Stadium. India and South Korea claimed joint third place after their semifinal exits.

In the first regu match, Amirul Zazwan Amir (feeder), Mohammad Syahir Mohd Rosdi (tekong), and Mohamad Azlan Alias (killer) were narrowly defeated, losing 11-15 in the first set, rallying to win the second 15-12, but eventually falling 15-17 in a nail-biting decider.

The second regu, featuring Farhan Adam, Muhammad Haziq Hairul Nizam, and Muhammad Noraizat Mohd Nordin, clinched the first set 15-13, but couldn’t hold off the Thai trio — Sittipong Kamchan, Tanaphon Sapyen, and Sirisak Anuloon — who fought back to win the next two sets 15-13 and 15-4. — Bernama
