KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 9 — Police are expected to request an extension of the remand for Malaysian rapper and filmmaker Wee Meng Chee — better known as Namewee — as they continue investigating the death of Taiwanese influencer Hsieh Yu-hsin, according to The New Straits Times.
The case has drawn significant attention in both Malaysia and Taiwan after Hsieh, also known online as Iris Hsieh, was found dead in a hotel bathroom along Jalan Conlay on October 22.
The 31-year-old influencer had reportedly been staying at the hotel with Namewee, 42, who turned himself in to police in the early hours of November 5. Police subsequently obtained a remand order to hold him for questioning until November 10.
Namewee is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
Authorities have yet to confirm whether foul play is involved, as they await toxicology and post-mortem results, which may take up to three months.
Namewee, noted for his provocative music and satirical commentary on Malaysian politics and culture, has long been a controversial figure and has previously faced investigations for alleged sedition and public indecency.
Hsieh, known in Taiwan for her travel and lifestyle content, was in Malaysia for work engagements before her death.
Police have urged the public not to spread unverified claims as speculation surrounding the case continues to circulate online.
