NIBONG TEBAL, March 21 — The Pulau Burung landfill here caught fire again early this morning, marking the second incident in just two months.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations, John Sagun Francis, said they received an emergency call at 5.40am and promptly deployed fire engines from the Nibong Tebal and Sungai Bakap stations to the location.

“The fire involves landfill waste and has spread across an estimated area of 10,000 square feet (0.093 hectares).

“Containment and firefighting efforts are currently in progress, with two excavators being used to create firebreaks to stop the flames from spreading further,” he said in a statement.

He added that the fire has yet to be brought under control. A total of 18 personnel, including officers from both stations, are involved in the operation, with assistance from volunteer fire brigades from Sungai Jawi, Nibong Tebal, Valdor, and Parit Buntar.

Previously, on February 8, a fire involving solid waste broke out at the same landfill and was successfully extinguished after nine hours of firefighting efforts. — Bernama
