MANILA, Jan 27 — Search and rescue efforts continue for 10 people still missing after a passenger ferry capsized off a southern Philippine province, with the death toll rising to 18, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported.

PCG spokesperson Captain Noemie Cayabyab said the total number of passengers on board was revised to 344, down from an initial 359, after confirming that 15 individuals listed on the manifest did not board the vessel.

The number of rescued passengers remains at 316, Cayabyab added.

The incident occurred at 1:50 a.m. yesterday (Malaysian time) when the MV Trisha Kerstin 3, en route from Zamboanga to Jolo in Sulu province, capsized. The vessel’s authorised passenger capacity is 352.

The PCG said the cause of the sinking is still under investigation.
